STAF is honored to announce we have donated $5,000 to the charity Support Our Scholars. Support Our Scholars helps provide financially challenged students with the ability to complete college and improve their chances for financial security. Below is some information from their website, supportourscholars.org, about their cause and objective.
Support Our Scholars’ objective is to increase the likelihood that financially challenged students will complete college and improve the odds for financial security. We accomplish this through two programs geared towards financially challenged, academically successful female students in Orange and Seminole County.
Our after-school college prep program (Steps to Success) has provided twenty-six students with information about the college application process, career paths, goal setting, and budgeting funds while in college. This year we have two programs, one at Jones High School and the second at Evans High School. The number of students attending has increased to thirty-two.
Through our Mentor/Scholarship Program we have provided thirteen female students with mentors and financial awards to cover expenses unmet by financial aid or academic scholarships. Two have graduated with degrees in psychology and allied biology.
The average reported annual income for our students is $22,161.20 (lowest reported income is $10,513) and the number of dependents range from three to six.
Six of our currently enrolled students have chosen the following areas of study: architecture, physics, nursing, business, and criminal justice.
The average college GPA for our students this past year was 3.35.
Our students are currently attending University of Florida, Rollins, University of Central Florida, Florida A& M, and Cornell.
